Introduction
You know that feeling when you have the house to yourself and it’s the perfect time to study? For some people, this may be a daily reality. With your family finally out of the way, you can put in as much effort as needed to get your work done. But for others, this may not be possible. Whether it’s because you’re an international student and can’t afford to travel back home for a break or if it’s because your family just won’t stop asking for your attention, there are ways to study at home with minimal distractions. Here are 5 easy tips on how to find success in studying at home and achieving your goals for the year!
Find Your Study Spot
The first step is finding a space where you can focus on your studies. Whether it’s in the living room, at the dining room table or even the couch, get a space where you can do everything you need to do for a course. Maybe it’s your books, your notes, a computer, a tablet or some other form of communication, find a spot where you can do your schoolwork without interruption. Maybe it’s a coffee shop or even in a library if you have a card! Just make sure your work station is equipped with everything you need to study effectively.
In terms of the work you’re doing, most people tend to go for the simpler things. For example, they choose a journal over a big text book, or a book of poetry over Shakespeare.
Eliminate Distractions
There are only two things you need in order to study effectively at home. One is a quiet environment, and the other is a good book. If the latter is the case, you already know how to choose a book that is not only engaging but also educational. That is where you can get the most out of studying from home.
Take a Nap
While it’s possible that a nap will wake you up from your slumber, there’s also a good chance you’ll fall back to sleep after your nap. Since it’s quite common to fall asleep during your nap, it’s better to just skip this advice. Instead, listen to some motivational music to get yourself in the right mindset to go to sleep, and make sure you know when your alarm is set.
Use Tools to Help You Focus
Who doesn’t love the feeling of physically leaving the house in search of the perfect spot to complete your work? So, if you can’t hop on a plane every weekend, you can’t quit! You just need a few tools to help you focus and do your best work. Download either BetterStudy or Google Drive for Mac to get access to tools that can help you focus and you’ll be prepared for when you need to go back to that location.
Head to the Library
If all else fails, you can still enjoy the feeling of the library. It’s hard to get to because you have to walk or take a bus there but it’s worth it. You’ll be able to avoid all distractions and get back to your work more efficiently. Libraries also have amazing study spaces which allow you to study without distractions from your peers.
Create a New “Study” Routine
Do you find yourself falling into a negative pattern where you go from doing what you want to study to what you feel like studying? If this is the case, then consider creating a new routine instead. Set yourself up for success by saying that you will do something you feel like doing. It doesn’t have to be something that will directly benefit you academically.
You could say you’ll study for 20 minutes after a meal or drink your coffee while watching your favorite show. It could be something completely random that helps your brain get rid of toxins or is just plain fun. Whatever you do, do it before you get distracted.
Take Breaks and Reward Yourself
Studying is a full-time job, and if you don’t give yourself breaks you’ll find yourself falling behind. To avoid this, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you are in control of how much time you spend studying, not your parents. Spend 5 minutes doing some breathing exercises or stretching to clear your mind. Also, a reward should always be given to students studying at home to encourage them to keep going. You don’t want to starve yourself so why not eat something sugary or fatty? You can also order pizza or eat some snacks.
Drink Plenty of Water
This is one of the most important factors to studying and staying healthy. Many studies have shown that if you keep your body hydrated, you’ll have more focus, clearer thoughts, and greater energy for studying.
